How to Use This Tool

See how AWS address reservations affect the usable capacity of an equal-size subnet plan. Teams multiply raw CIDR size by subnet count and discover later that provider reservations and zone layout leave fewer assignable addresses.

Why AWS Subnet Capacity needs more than a raw total

AWS reserves the first four and last IPv4 address in each subnet, so each subnet has five addresses unavailable to resources by default. This calculator keeps that reservation editable for deliberate alternatives and reports usable capacity after subtracting it.

Current subnet plan10% more subnetscompare
The comparison rounds a 10% subnet increase up to a whole subnet and keeps prefix and reservations unchanged.

The subnet capacity formula

Raw addresses per subnet = 2^(32 − prefix). Usable addresses per subnet = raw addresses − reserved addresses. Total usable addresses = usable addresses per subnet × planned subnet count. AWS subnet prefixes range from /16 through /28; the default five reserved addresses can be changed to model an intentional alternative.

Interpreting total usable subnet addresses

Add growth and failover headroom, then validate service-specific IP consumption such as load balancers and managed databases. The 10% scenario adds whole subnets by rounding up, with prefix and reservations held constant. It is a capacity comparison, not a forecast. Check the actual VPC CIDR, overlap, existing assignments and service-specific address needs before provisioning.

What this AWS Subnet Capacity model leaves out

Existing allocations, secondary CIDRs, prefix delegation, IPv6, service quotas and fragmented free space are excluded. That is where AWS Subnet Capacity stops being trustworthy. If an excluded factor could reverse total usable subnet addresses, extend the model explicitly or use the authoritative account system instead of hiding the factor inside an unexplained adjustment.

Evidence and independent verification

The reference reviewed for AWS Subnet Capacity is AWS — VPC subnet IP addressing. AWS — VPC subnet IP addressing supports the named definition or rule but does not supply private values for total usable subnet addresses. Before acting on the result, reconcile the worked example with the relevant dashboard, invoice, export or measurement.

Private, reproducible calculation

AWS Subnet Capacity runs its arithmetic in the current browser tab and requests no login or API key. That keeps the AWS Subnet Capacity inputs away from the site's calculation server, while leaving the user responsible for detecting stale data or a changed platform rule. When an assumption changes, reopen AWS — VPC subnet IP addressing and rerun the saved AWS Subnet Capacity scenario.

Model assumptions

  • Estimates use the visible equal-size subnet inputs only.
  • VPC CIDR overlap, existing assignments, IPv6, service quotas and service-specific usage are not checked.
  • The calculator uses only the visible fields and does not fetch account data.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is usable subnet capacity calculated?
The tool calculates 2^(32 − prefix) minus reserved addresses for one subnet, then multiplies by the planned subnet count. It uses only the values shown on this page.
Which AWS subnet prefixes are supported?
AWS accepts subnet IPv4 prefixes from /16 through /28. The calculator starts at /24; AWS default reservations are five IPv4 addresses per subnet.
What does the 10% subnet scenario mean?
It rounds the planned subnet count up after adding 10%, then holds the prefix and reserved-address count constant. This is a simple capacity scenario, not a forecast.
When should I reject the AWS Subnet Capacity result?
Use this as a planning estimate only. It does not inspect your VPC, detect overlapping CIDRs, or account for existing assignments and AWS service-specific address use.
What AWS subnet reservation does this use?
AWS reserves the first four and the final IPv4 address in each subnet. The default reserved count here is five.
Where does AWS Subnet Capacity process my inputs?
The calculation runs in browser JavaScript and requests no AWS credentials or calculation API.
